Dinner and Dessert at Four Seasons Scottsdale

Dinner and dessert at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North was a delicious night out.

I’ll admit it, I love pie, pie might be my favorite dessert. When I began noticing Friday Night Pie Fights on Instagram, I was intrigued and started paying attention to the weekly pie flavors. Chef Lance of Proof Canteen has been making some delicious pies! Last week the competition was between Dutch Apple and French Silk. Yum! Two of my favorites! I really wanted to taste those two pies but we were up in Sedona last week so I was not able to go to Proof. I decided not to let another week pass without checking out the pie fights for myself. I made a dinner reservation for two at Proof, An American Canteen at the Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North. We drove up to Scottsdale (Arizona) to get in on the pie tasting.

Cocktails at Onyx

We arrived with time to spare so we headed to Onyx for a happy hour beverage. The house-made sangria was refreshing. Our friendly bartender explained that they muddle fruit, add the wine and let it sit for about a week.  No boxed “sangria” here.  This is the real deal with delicious fruity notes. Salty chips were the perfect nibble alongside the drink. Interesting to note that the Four Seasons is now using hay as a natural, fully-biodegradable alternative to plastic straws.

Exploring the Property

After relaxing at Onyx for a little while, we headed out to explore the resort grounds before our meal. The Four Seasons Troon is nestled into a valley at the foothills of Pinnacle Peak.

Various fountains and water features throughout the property lend a calming sound and cooler feel to the grounds.

Four Season Residence Club Scottsdale

We took a walk to the residence club side of the resort. The adobe-style units are a very traditional, Southwestern-style that blends well with the surrounding desert landscape of huge boulders, cacti, and other desert plants.

The condominium style units of the residence club would be a relaxing place to call home for a week-long stay.

There are several pools on the property. This is the main pool near the casitas for the Four Seasons Residence Club units. The photo was taken just as the sun was setting.

I’m a sucker for fresh pool towels. The set-up pool chairs looked very inviting.

Proof, an American Canteen

When it was time for our dinner reservation, we headed over to Proof. It is a little tricky to find.  Proof is tucked away down a path to the right of the main lobby. The outside seating was open, but it was still a bit too warm for my comfort so we opted to sit inside. Live music added to the upbeat atmosphere in the restaurant. In another month and all through the winter, evening dining on the outside patio would be lovely.

The old-fashioned soda fountain offers ice cream desserts, shakes, and candy by the pound.

The décor in Proof is eclectic and fun. There was a bit of an Old West, train theme going on. There are several train-themed lanterns around the tables and framed art on the walls featured old trains.

Service was friendly and prompt. Of course, I had to ask about the pie fights right off the bat. Our server explained that each Friday night for 16 weeks, Proof offers two different, freshly-baked pies for dessert. A classic pie is paired against a new twist on a standard pie. Tonight’s pie competition was apple lattice pie vs. Bostom cream pie.

Pie and menu

We enjoyed our dinner. I ordered the “Smoked Babe on a Bun” which is a 5-hour slow cooked pork, coleslaw, red onions, Carolina bbq sauce, and house-made pickles all on a pretzel bun. It was delicious. The meat was super tender and the Carolina bbq sauce added just the right amount of flavor. Kevin ordered the Maine Lobster Roll – an odd choice so far from Maine but he liked it.

Dessert Time – Friday Night Pie Fight

After dinner, it was time for pie. We ordered one of each so that we could make an informed choice. I thought the apple lattice pie was perfect. It had a nice amount of cinnamon with a tender, flaky crust and was topped with vanilla ice cream then finished with a caramel sauce. It was definitely the closest I’ve had to a homemade pie at a restaurant. The Boston cream was unique and tasty, but not the winner, in my opinion.

After a cup of coffee to accompany our pie, we were ready to head home.  Night had fallen while we were eating. We exited the restaurant to find that the property was lit with lanterns and twinkle lights – very pretty and also conducive to star-gazing.

We headed back to the valet to retrieve our car and head home. Pro-tip: Valet parking is complimentary when dining on property.  Happy hour cocktails, a nice dinner, delicious pie for dessert, and a chance to check out the Four Seasons Scottsdale at Troon North made for a fun date night. We will plan a staycation here someday soon.

The Friday Night Pie Fights at Proof Canteen are continuing through November 16, 2018, with the final showdown to be held on Thanksgiving.
